The course was going very well until the proofs stepped in. With the proofs, I just don't understand where to start. I get the structure and then I get lost. I try to think of different plans and where they'll get me, but it is tough to even think of one plan. My goal is to develop strategies that connect one statement to another. Either way, I like proofs. Proofs always have a given destination, I'll just have to work on finding the paths.
Once you structure your proof, what remains is the creative part --- thinking of a route from what's given to what's required. In this course you will get substantial credit for structuring the proof, and (I hope) time for filling in the missing ... parts.
ReplyDeleteSome tips for proofs:
ReplyDelete- Instead of only focusing on how to get from A to B, try to simplify B. By this I mean, try to backtrack from B to A.
- You will probably need to use all assumptions to complete the proof (otherwise it'd be superfluous), so if you haven't needed to use one of your assumptions yet, try to think of ways how that assumption could be used.
I think proofs have been conquered, thank you for the advice!
